Proof of Performance

When two or more parties enter into a contractual business agreement, the party that’s being served wants to be assured that they are receiving the value they paid for. Once the outlined objectives or standards have been met, the vendor or retailer, or whoever else is providing the service, will offer some sort of proof of performance (POP) to their customer, letting the organization know that the aforementioned agreement has been fulfilled.

Proof of performance can come in many different forms. Some businesses may send out a written certificate; others take a less formal approach. Either way, the important thing is that vendors are able to demonstrate to their clients that they have satisfied their end of the bargain.

Proof of performance is absolutely crucial in business, as it provides an objective measurement of how well—or not—a company is serving its customers. It can help hold companies accountable and keep all parties aligned on the achievement of desired outcomes.

In some cases, customers may not even realize that their standards haven’t been met until it’s too late to go back and ask for correction, which is why it’s important for businesses to show proof of performance as soon as the job is done so that the transaction or agreement can be truly marked as fulfilled.

Buyers need to be able to create accountability with their vendors and ensure they are receiving the value promised. Considering the hours spent in evaluation, contract negotiations, and due diligence to onboard a new vendor, it’s in your organization’s best interest to monitor whether or not the company is delivering on the value promised. Unfortunately, in enterprise business, that’s rarely the case.
